This is what Google’s new AI Overviews look like

Google’s AI Overviews have been live in the USA since May. They are a significant new feature that provides AI-generated answers to complex search queries directly in the search results. This is done by integrating large language models (LLMs) that can understand, process and generate natural language.

In future, AI Overviews will be placed “above” the organic results. The content consists of three main components: the AI Snapshot, the Conversational Mode and the Vertical Searches.

AI Overviews directly impact rankings and traffic in search

The introduction of AI Overviews is probably the biggest change to Google Search since the Panda Update (2011). By placing them “above” the search results, they push them further “down”. This means:

  • AI Overviews can map the user journey in a snapshot and offer much more interactivity than a featured snippet
  • Traditional search results become less visible for users
  • Impact on top ranking traffic as a top position in Google Search does not guarantee a top position in AI Overviews
  • AI overviews will have a similar effect to the “featured snippet”: simple (definition) questions are answered directly in the snapshot content (“zero-click answers”)
  • Easy-to-answer upper-funnel topics will generate less traffic in future
